about the author

The author of this site is Jules Clancy.

I love food and I love wine and somehow I have managed to work in both industries and have ended up with not one, but two science degrees – the first in food and the second in wine. In spite of this I like to think that I’m not a nerd, really.

I have made wine in some of the most beautiful places in the world: From the Hunter and Barossa Valleys in Australia, to Sonoma and Los Gatos in California USA to the home of Shiraz – the Rhone Valley in France. I loved my days as a roving winemaker, but I finally came to the realisation that wine is more fun to drink than make and that the world of food is where I really need to be.

In my current job I design chocolate biscuits and cookies – I know it’s tough but someone’s got to do it. I dream of one day earning a living solely through my writing and photography. I am the food and wine contributor for two up-and-coming wine merchants: Kampai and The Vine Press.

Recently I self published my first book – ‘And the love is free’  – a cookbook that celebrates the beautiful life of my Mum. It is a collection of simple, no-fuss Australian recipes. Recipes that anyone could learn to cook and that everyone will love to eat. It’s like a modern version of the CWA cookbook with page-licking pictures and personal stories.‘and the love is free’. Only available to buy though my blog – you can download 8 FREE sample recipes HERE.

A few facts about me: I am a girl and was born in Australia and grew up on a sheep farm. I live in Sydney and feel incredibly lucky to have a view like the one below, even if I can only see it in Winter when the trees lose their leaves.

When I’m not cooking, writing about food and wine, taking photographs (of food), or tasting chocolate in the name of work I can be found indulging my passions for long boozy lunches, travel, running, cookbooks, boating on Sydney harbour, cheese and red shoes. (OK. I have a thing for all shoes but red ones really take my fancy – although my collection of black patent leather numbers has increased dramatically of late).

a note about the content on stonesoup:

stonesoup is a blog that helps people become better home cooks by using a minimalist approach to cooking. It is a weekly digest of minimalist recipes and kitchen tips with beautiful photographs.

One of the things I love about cooking is that there is inspiration everywhere and that I am constantly learning new things. This blog aims to help you become a better home cook by providing an opportunity for me to share my discoveries and bring a bit of food science, creativity and fun into everyday cooking.

All the photography on this site has been taken with my trusty Nikon D50 using my worth-every-penny macro lense. I find that natural light gives the best results for most photography but is really essential for good food photography so have given up trying to take photos at night.

I believe that with food, just as in life, there is beauty in imperfection. My food styling philosophy is to keep everything as natural and simple as possible and most of all for it still to be real and edible after the picture has been taken. No trickery or elaborate props here.
