What is this 5-second counter-intuitive joyful weight loss strategy?

It’s the opposite of everything we’ve been taught about losing weight.

Forget eating less.

Forget stopping before you’re full.

The strategy is simply this: let yourself eat until you’re satisfied.

Not stuffed. Not at 80% full. Just that comfortable, settled feeling of satisfaction — and then you stop.

That five seconds?

It’s just pausing to check in with yourself: “Am I satisfied?” If yes, move on with your day. If not, keep eating until you are.

Simple. Counterintuitive. And it works.

How I Discovered It

There’s a neuroscientist named Michael Graziano — a professor at Princeton — who wrote a fascinating article about hunger being psychological, and how dieting only makes it worse.

He tested this on himself.

By simply making sure he felt satisfied at mealtimes (rather than snacking and grazing all day), he lost around 80 pounds in eight months. No restriction. No willpower. Just: eat at meals, and make sure you’re satisfied before you leave the table.

That one shift was enough.

Why Eating until Satisfied Works

Here’s the science behind it.

When you try to eat in a calorie deficit — or stop before you feel satisfied — your brain notices. It clocks the gap and thinks: “Food is scarce. We need to pay attention.”

And in response, it actually dials up your hunger.

You might stick to the restriction for a few weeks or even months. But eventually something happens, and you overeat — because your brain has been quietly waiting for the opportunity.

Eating until satisfied turns off that psychological hunger signal.

It tells your brain: “We’re okay. Food is not scarce.”

And when that mental hunger quiets down, the future overeating doesn’t happen. The weight takes care of itself — almost on autopilot.

I’ve seen this again and again, with myself and with my clients.

It’s one of those shifts that radically changes your relationship with food and your weight — without doing anything hard.

Putting the Strategy into Practice

Start by working on the belief that eating until satisfied is the path to losing weight.

Then, at dinner experiment with letting yourself feel satisfied.

If you’re not sure, go back for more until you can decide ‘Yes I’m done’.
