My Strangely Delicious High Protein Snack

I could start this by telling you how helpful it is to have some high protein snacks in your repertoire. But the truth is the real reason I look forward to this treat every day is because its so damn delicious.

It’s one of those glorious combinations that feels like a treat but is actually packed with nutrition as well.

I started with unflavored collagen powder for my hair, skin and nails (like it says on the can). I wasn’t expecting it to taste great. But I found if I mixed it with a little cream or milk – just enough to create a creamy paste it tasted like custard.

And I LOVE custard.

Some days I stick to the original collagen powder but I’ve also branched out with a vanilla flavored whey protein isolate powder that’s flavored with stevia. I have this on workout days. It really feels more like dessert.

My boys love the vanilla powder mixed in with greek yoghurt and a swirl of peanut butter. The possibilities are endless here.

Of course if you want a dairy-free option use your favourite plant based milk or cream. And there are plenty of plant-based protein powders on the market to play around with.

Oh and protein is super important for satiety. As well as gorgeous hair and skin.

So if you find yourself in a ‘snacky’ mode where nothing seems to satisfy it’s probably a sign your body needs protein. This little snack will help. And prioritize protein in your meals as well.

Servings 1 snacky person

Ingredients

  • 2-3 heaped tablespoons collagen or protein powder
  • 1-2 teaspoons cream or milk

Instructions

  1. Place protein powder in a small glass or bowl or tea cup.
  2. Stir in just enough liquid to make a thick paste.
  3. Enjoy with dainty teaspoons.

Variations & Substitutions for my Delicious High Protein Snack

vegan / dairy-free – use plant based protein powder and your favourite plant based milk or cream or yoghurt.

different protein – collagen is best for beauty. Whey protein is best for building muscle because it has a high amount of the amino acid leucine. There are so many plant based options – choose the one with the highest leucine content.

more substantial (low carb) – add a swirl or almond butter or peanut butter or tahini. Or serve with greek yoghurt. Also good with some seeds or nuts for crunch.

chocolate – use a chocolate flavoured protein powder or serve with finely grated milk or dark chocolate.

more fancy / for entertaining – serve in pretty glasses! And consider topping with some fresh berries or cherries.

Waste Avoidance Strategy

cream / milk – unopened cartons will generally keep in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. If you need to store for longer, just pop in the freezer in a sealed container.

collagen or protein powder – keep in the pantry.

Problem Solving Guide

bland – next time try a different flavoured protein powder. For now a little peanut butter or some berries can liven things. Or if you’re after a sweet treat sprinkle over some brown sugar or honey.

too runny – if you add too much liquid the protein powder will dissolve. You can add more protein powder to thicken things up. Or add peanut butter, tahini or almond butter.

Yes! Just prepare as per the recipe and refrigerate until needed. Or it’s fine out of the fridge for a few hours if you needed to take it to have on-the-go.

How long does My Strangely Delicious High Protein Snack last in the fridge?

Leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for at least a week or can be frozen.

Is My Strangely Delicious High Protein Snack healthy? Is it good for me?

Absolutely! From a nutrition perspective it contains a good dose of protein to help you feel satisfied.
